The Maui Police Department’s 75th Recruit Class graduated today in a ceremony held at the Kamehameha Golf Course in Waikapu. 

A total of 14 recruits were sworn in after successfully completing an eight month recruit training program.

The Maui police department’s newest members include: Gregory Boteilho, Anthony Buchanan, James Burkett, Ryan Cabral, Matthew Engoring, Darryl Honda, Jonathan Honda, Alon Jones, Matthew Kostyal, Alvin Ota, Jeremy Pallone-De La Torre, Gershom Slonim, Corey Tom, and Jeffrey Willits.

The department’s Outstanding Recruit Award went to Jonathan Honda for presenting the most consistent achievement in the areas of training, leadership, judgement, attitude and service to others.

Other awards included the following:

  • Scholastic Achievement Award – Recruit Gershom Slonim: Presented to the most astute recruit for achieving and maintaining the highest academic grade point average. This included study in criminal law, first responder training, CPR, and motor vehicle accident investigations.  The 2nd and 3rd place recognition in this area went to Matthew Kostyal and James Burkett respectively.
  • Neil T. Endo Firearms Award – Recruit Gershom Slonim: The award was presented to the most accurate marksman, achieving the highest score during firearms training to include the final written exam, physical shot gun, and a rifle course.  The 2nd and 3rd place recognition in this area went to James Burkett and Corey Tom respectively.
  • M. Cecil “Rusty” Dickson Award for Physical Fitness – Recruit Jonathan Honda: The award went to the most physically fit recruit, demonstrating overall superiority in arrest, defense and tactics as well as physical training.  Recruits Jeremy Pallone-De La Torre and Corey Tom tied for 2nd and Alon Jones was recognized for 3rd place.
  • Best Notebook Award – Recruit Jeremny Pallone-De La Torre: For content, organization and completeness and neatness.  The 2nd and 3rd place recognition in this area went to Alvin Ota and James Burkett respectively.

The members will now be assigned to the Field Training Officer Program in the coming months.
