4+ Magnitude Hilo Earthquake, No Tsunami

There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii following a preliminary magnitude 4.8 earthquake reported at 10:47 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2012 in the Hilo region of the Big Island.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there is no tsunami expected, however, some areas may have experienced shaking.

While the quake was measured at 4.8 by the Hawaii Volcanoes Observatory, the USGS had recorded the tremor as a 4.4 magnitude.

The earthquake was centered 2 miles WNW of Honomu, 4 miles NNW of Pepeekeo, 7 miles NNW of Papaikou, 13 miles NNW of Hilo, and 200 miles ESE of Honolulu.

The depth of the quake was 10.4 miles.
