UPDATE: Lahaina Man Suffers Fatal Injuries in Moped Crash

Police say the moped operator, Kana Cox Jr., 53, has died from his injuries after being struck by a pick-up truck on Honoapiilani Highway.

Cox was taken off life support systems at Maui Memorial Medical Center and was pronounced dead at 8:16 p.m.

The accident is still under investigation.

A 53-year-old Lahaina man was transported to the hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a pick-up truck on the Honoapiilani Highway.

The accident was reported on Easter Sunday, April 8, at 11:34 a.m. near the Wahikului Road intersection.

According to police reports, the 66-year-old Lahaina man driving a maroon and grey 1990 Ford F-150 pick-up truck, failed to yield the right of way to a blue Sunny moped.

The pick-up truck was traveling north bound on the Honoapiilani Highway, in the same direction as the moped, which was traveling within the bike route.

When the pick-up truck effected a right turn onto Wahikuli Road in front of the moped, the moped collided with the right front fender of the pick-up truck, police said.

The truck driver and his 71-year-old male passenger were both wearing seatbelts and were uninjured.

The moped operator was not wearing a helmet and was transported to the emergency room with traumatic head injuries, according to medics.

Maui police say the involvement of speed, drugs, and alcohol has not been determined as the investigation is still pending.

A moped operator was transported to the hospital in critical condition following a traffic collision in West Maui on Easter Sunday, April 8, 2012, authorities said.

Authorities say the moped collided with another vehicle on the Honoapiilani Highway near Wahikuli Road in Lahaina.

Medic 4 arrived on scene at 11:39 a.m. and found the patient unresponsive and with traumatic head injuries.

The man was not wearing a helmet and was being transported in critical condition to the Maui Memorial Medical Center, and was receiving stabilizing treatment while en route.
