The Velma McWayne Santos Center in Wailuku is closing for renovations and repairs beginning today, Monday, April 23, 2012.

Building improvements include: ADA parking stalls and access aisles, main ramp entry, restrooms, water fountains, better paths to Waena and Eha streets, as well as new fire alarms in restrooms and offices.

That portion of planned improvements is scheduled to be completed by July 23, barring any delays.

Once those projects are complete, the Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation plans to start work on a second project to replace 13 doors with new glass doors.

Contractors have scheduled 30 days to complete the project, but county officials say it will likely be finished in a week.

The building is scheduled to be closed to the public for construction from April 23 to September 30; however, if there are no delays and work proceeds unimpeded the center could open much sooner.

The parks department will reopen the center on August 11 to accommodate primary elections if work is still ongoing at that time.
