Visitor Injured in Fall on “Commando Hike”

A 21-year-old woman from Carmel, California, had to be airlifted to safety after she jumped into a Maui pond and struck her leg on a submerged rock.

The incident was reported at 3:26 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 in the area known as Commando Trail, or Bamboo Forest.

Authorities say the woman jumped from a height of 5 to 6 feet and sustained a possible broken left leg.

Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said the woman was still in the water when crews arrived on scene.  The woman was airlifted to a landing zone by Rescue-10 and Air-1, where Medic-2 was on hand to transport the woman to the hospital.

Crews from the Maui Fire Department’s Engine-2 also assisted with the rescue.
