As the popular Art Maui 2012 exhibit came to a close, the MACC ushered in a new show with Maui-made works on Sunday, May 6 in the Schaefer International Gallery – Celebrating the Artist in Us. The annual exhibit showcases the artwork of K-8 grade students from several Maui County  public and private schools.

Celebrating the Artist in Us has a specific theme each year – this year’s is “Visual Storytelling,” giving Maui students a chance to expand their imaginations and create surprisingly excellent works of art.

The exhibit not only gives us an opportunity to see what’s on our students’ mysterious and creative minds, but also helps them gain confidence when they see others (especially adults) respond to their creations. To a five year old, having a finger painting  in the Schaeffer International Gallery is like having a featured exhibit at MOMA in New York.

The exhibit runs at Schaefer International Gallery through May 20th. Admission is free and the gallery is open Wednesday-Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
