Women in Technology Holds Junior Girls STEM Camp

Girls entering the 7th and 8th grades in Fall 2012 are eligible to attend 4 days of “Excite Camp,” a program sponsored by the Maui Economic Development Board’s Women in Technology program.

Students will learn about astronomy, space, and science from a Hawaiian cultural perspective, investigate and analyze Hawaiian culture past and present, explore a future career in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), engage in fun hands-on engineering activities, and tour one of the largest Department of Defense telescopes where they will see stars from the top of Haleakala.

The Excite Camp program will be at Ke Alahele, The MEDB Center in the Maui Research & Technology Park, 1305 North Holopono Street, Kihei, HI 96753 on all four days.

The preliminary agenda is as follows:

  • Day 1 – Tuesday, July 3, 8:30 am to 3 p.m. – Analyze Hawaiian & Modern Culture Past & Present
  • Day 2 – Wednesday, July 4, 8:30 am to 3 p.m. – All about Engineering/Hands-on Engineering Activities
  • Day 3 – Thursday, July 5 – 8:30 am to 12 am – Native Hawaiian Voyaging Presentation, Hawaiian Night Sky, Tour of the Telescopes atop Haleakala and Star Party
  • Day 4 – Friday, July 6 – 8:30 am to 3 p.m. – Technology all around us

Lunch, snacks and water will be provided all four days of the Excite Camp. Dinner will be provided on July 5th. Participants are allowed to bring their own snacks and drinks.

To be eligible for this event, students must be able to participate on all four days. Space is limited. A selection team will decide on student participation status and you and your family will be contacted by June 15, 2012.

Excite Camp is a collaboration between MEDB/WIT and the University of Hawaii’s Institute for Astronomy, the US Air Force, and Maui Research and Technology Park tenants. It is funded in part by the Air Force Research Laboratory and the US Department of Education.
