The MACC Presents Four “Art21” Episode Screenings

On Thursday, June 28 at 6 p.m. Maui Arts & Cultural Center presents the first of four free episode screenings of the PBS program, Art in the Twenty-First Century (Art21).

The Art21 series focuses on contemporary art from visionaries across the globe, whose works aim to challenge our perceptions of the world around us.

Four episodes appear in the McCoy Studio Theater starting with “Change” on Thursday, June 28 at 6 pm; “Balance” on Thursday, July 5 at 6 pm; “History” on Thursday, July 12 at 6 p.m., and “Boundaries” on Thursday, August 2 at 6 p.m.

Each episode is one-hour long, and includes in-depth artist profiles and interviews from several areas of the globe.

Art21’s initiative is to inspire international conversations about contemporary art and to expose several viewers to the world of the talented artists that are profiled in the series.

Short descriptions of each episode are included below:

Change 

This first episode features artists who bear witness to cultural, material and aesthetic transformation through their works. They also engage their communities in their art as both collaborates and subjects. Featured artists include Ai Weiwei, El Anatsui and Catherine Opie.

Balance

In this episode, featured artists Rackstraw Downes, Robert Mangold and Sarah Sze reveal their sculptures, paintings, and installations that challenge conventional notions of perception and representation.

History 

Artists in this episode combine narratives with historical events to create a style of their own that explores and overturns commonly held assumptions about historic “truth.” The episode’s featured artists are Marina Abramovic, Glenn Ligon and Mary Reid Kelley.

Boudaries

In the fourth episode, artists David Altmejd, Lynda Benglis and Tabaimo  present their taboo subject matter, innovative media uses, and exploration of the human figure.
