A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Saturday for the Future Waiohuli Community & Recreational and Center, located at the bottom of Lau’ie Drive.
At the blessing event, Panasonic Corporation announced the donation of 30- Panasonic 220 watt Photovoltaic panels (6.6 kW) to offset the community centers energy requirements.
Hawaii ECO Projects role is to build and supply the inverters, racking, all other materials and future servicing for the PV system.
Phase I of the Waiohuli Community Center project will provide the following facilities:
- new building containing a kitchen, food storage, restroom, and an outdoor eating area
- large hale hālāwai or meeting house
- landscaping, including a native plant nursery and garden
- on-site parking for 20 cars; and
- electricity, water and septic services to support the new buildings.
While the Kitchen House is a contemporary structure, it was designed to compliment the traditional hale hālāwai that will be built on the site nearby. The same stone used in the perimeter walls of the hale hālāwai will be used as stone veneer along the exterior walls of the Kitchen House.
The Kitchen House building will also have large sliding glass doors that open up to both the food service are and outdoor eating area. It is designed for natural ventilation, with large screen louvers at the upper portions of the exterior walls.
The shade trellis above outdoor eating area, and the wood construction on the hale hālāwai will be made of Hawaiian kiawe wood poles sourced locally.
