Principles of Great Streets Comes to Maui

Gary Toth of Project for Public Spaces will present “Principles of Great Streets” and “Why Streets as Places” in a three hour interactive workshop scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday, August 31.

The workshop will be held in the Mayor’s Conference Room, located on the 9th floor of the Kalana O Maui building in Wailuku. Time permitting, a street audit will also take place with members sharing their findings with the group.

Residents who want to learn more about community design as well as architects, planners, engineers, educators, administrators are invited to attend.

“Gary Toth brings a wealth of information and experience in creating great streets and communities,” said NPAC coordinator Sandra McGuinness.

“His time on Maui is especially important now as the county and communities work toward Complete Streets policy development. A question that comes up at many of the Nutrition and Physical Activity meetings is ‘How do you retrofit an existing town while maintaining its culture and character?’ We’ll get some answers at this workshop,” said McGuinness.

Gary Toth spent 34 years in project management within the New Jersey Department of Transportation.  He is also an instructor for the National Highway Institute Training Course for Transportation and Land Use.

Project for Public Spaces is a nonprofit planning, design and educational organization dedicated to helping people create and sustain public spaces that build stronger communities. Their “placemaking” approach is designed to help citizens transform their public spaces into vital places that highlight local assets, spur rejuvenation and serve common needs.

The workshop is supported, in part, by the state Department of Health, Healthy Hawai`i Initiative and the County of Maui.
