Kumu hula/recording artist Uluwehi Guerrero celebrates his 30th year of sharing his music and hula with the world. In this unparalleled stage production, Celebration of the Heart, “faith” sustains Uluwehi as he stands upon a firm foundation of knowledge, wisdom and nurturing, which is filled with dedication in his love of Hawaiian culture, and “hope” fills his heart with passion.

For three decades, Uluwehi has mentored and nurtured hundreds of students. As kumu hula of Hālau Kauluokalā, he continues to instill knowledge, confidence and enduring pride to more than 300 dancers, ensuring the continuance of a hālau strong in traditional values and respect for all things Hawaiian. “Aloha” is at the very core of Uluwehi.

Totally 80s Live: A Flock of Seagulls & When in Rome UK. Saturday, September 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the McCoy Studio Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center

A Flock of Seagulls are an English new wave, synth-pop band originally formed in Liverpool by brothers Michael “Mike” Score (keyboards, vocals) and Alister “Ali” Score (drums). The group had a string of international hit singles, including “I Ran (So Far Away),” “Space Age Love Song” and “Wishing (If I Had A Photograph of You).”

When in Rome are a new wave trio from Manchester who are best known for their hits, “The Promise” and “Heaven Knows.” Catch this “totally 80s” concert for a night of memorable music.

Riddim of Knowledge, DJ ILLZ & Sweet Beets @ Longhis. Saturday, September 1 at 10 p.m. in Lahaina

Longhi’s Lahaina, an Italian restaurant at 888 Front Street, will host this dance party with multiple sets by Riddim of Knowledge, DJ Illz, and DJ Sweet Beets. The event is sponsored by Choice Health Bar and Maui Wowee Boo Tubes.

Riddim of Knowledge, a Hawaiian-style roots and reggae music band features local musicians Alika Ikeda (percussion, vocals), Kawika Cosma (guitar, vocals), John Kahaialii (bass, vocals), Chris Cabrera (drummer), and Ikaika Cosma (ukulele, vocals).

Tickets: $10 includes drink specials.

Poi Doggie Contest 2012. Sunday, September 2 at 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the Schaefer Lawn at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center

Bring the family for an afternoon of fun by watching or entering your dog in the Poi Doggie contest. This event offers a variety of canine-centric contest categories with prizes (for poi dogs only – non-pedigree, not purebred).

Categories to be judged are: Best Dressed, Best Howl, Best Trick, Dog-Owner Look-Alike, Most Mixed Up and Stellar Senior (enter one category only for each dog; entry fee is $10 for contestants). The audience votes for Maui’s Favorite Poi Dog.

Tickets: Admission is free.

Starry Night Cinema – “My Dog Skip” Sunday, September 2, 7 p.m. in the Pavilion/Amphitheater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center

This free family fun event features the wholesome film, My Dog Skip on the big screen. Based on the autobiographical book, My Dog Skip by Willie Morris, the story is about a shy boy growing up in 1940s Mississippi with the help of his beloved dog and best friend. The movie stars Frankie Muniz, Kevin Bacon and Diane Lane.

Bring a blanket or beach chair to relax on the lawn and enjoy casual dining, drink specials and live music by Randall Rospond of the Haiku Hillbillys and Mana’o Radio.
