Haleakalā Summit Wind Advisory Cancelled

The National Weather Service has cancelled the wind advisory for the summits of Haleakalā, Mauna Loa, and Mauna Kea. Forecasters say winds over the volcanoes are diminishing, and the advisory is no longer needed.

A wind advisory has been issued for the summit area of Haleakalā until 10 a.m. today, Monday, Dec. 3, 2012.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory for the area above the 6,000 foot elevation saying winds are expected to be 25 to 35 mph from the southwest, with gusts to 50 mph.

Forecasters say southwest winds remain strong, south of an upper level trough. The trough is gradually moving away to the northeast.

The National Weather Service anticipates winds diminishing later this morning.

As a precautionary measure, motorists should use extra caution while driving in the area. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Loose objects that could become airborne should be secured or brought indoors.
