Forecasters from the National Weather Service say increasing southeasterly winds have begun affecting the upper elevations of Haleakala on the island of Maui.

A wind Advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. with southeast winds blowing at 25 to 35 mph, and localized gusts over 45 mph.

The National Weather Service advises motorists that winds this strong can bring down tree branches and make driving difficult for high profile vehicles.

Brief gusty down-slope winds may also be possible at the lower elevations, especially along the northwest slopes of Haleakala.

Winds are expected to remain strong into the afternoon hours.
