A New Year’s Day traffic accident claimed the life of a 61-year-old woman on Maui.
The crash was reported at 6:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, on Kahului Beach Road at the Wahine Pio Avenue intersection.
The woman, identified by Maui police as Constance Scott, died after being transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
According to police reports, Scott was the front seat passenger in a silver 1994 Toyota Camry that was broadsided by another vehicle.
Police say the Camry was traveling north and attempting to execute a left turn onto Wahine Pio, when the vehicle was struck by a red 1989 Toyota pickup truck that was traveling south within the left inner lane of Kahului Beach Road.
The 64-year-old-male operator of the Camry was also transported to the emergency room where he remained in stable condition at last report.
According to police, the 31-year-old male operator of the Toyota pickup, and his 35-year-old male passenger did not suffer any injuries from the collision.
All involved were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, police said.
Traffic was rerouted around the affected area of the roadway from 7:06 p.m. to 12:35 a.m. while police conducted an investigation.
The incident was Maui County’s first fatal crash of 2013, compared to none at the same time last year.
The involvement of speed, alcohol, and drugs are still pending as this collision remains under investigation. Police say the posted speed limit in the area of the crash is 35 miles per hour.
