65 mph Gusts Expected at Summit of Haleakalā
By Wendy Osher
There is a high wind warning in effect for the summit area of Haleakalā on Maui; and a wind advisory in effect for all of the Hawaiian islands.
The warning and advisory are in effect from 10 a.m. today to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5.
Forecasters from the National Weather Service say high pressure building north of the state will bring strong trades across the main islands, and very strong winds over Haleakalā.
The Warning at Haleakalā is in effect for the area above the 6,000-foot elevation. According to the National Weather Service, winds of between 40 and 45 mph with localized gusts over 65 mph are expected.
Winds this strong can be hazardous for individuals hiking in the area, and motorists–especially those with high profile vehicles.
Winds across the state will be in the 20 to 35 mph range, with gusts over 50 mph.
