Haleakalā High School Internship Application Deadline, March 15
By Wendy Osher
High school students interested in a three-week internship at Haleakalā National Park are invited to submit an application for the competitive program.
The Pōhai Maile Summer Internship Program is limited to the participation of 12 students who will be selected through a formal application and interview process.
The free internship runs from June 10-28, 2013, with applications due by Friday, March 15. Applicants must be Hawai‘i residents currently enrolled in grades 9-12.
The Pōhai Maile program was created in 2011 to give local high school students the opportunity to explore career pathways in Hawai‘i conservation.
Interns are afforded the opportunity to work alongside Haleakalā National Park professionals in areas such as resources management, interpretation and facilities management.
Interns will also have opportunities to engage with other federal, state, and non-profit environmental organizations to further expand their professional network and gain an island-wide conservation perspective.
Interested applicants must be available full-time for the duration of the internship. Program hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., not including travel time to and from the park. Free transportation is provided from designated pick-up sites in Central Maui and Upcountry. A living allowance of $25 a day will be provided to interns to help offset the costs of supplies needed for the program. All applicants state-wide must provide their own housing.
More information can be viewed via www.volunteer.gov, however, online applications will not be accepted. Additional information and the official application packet may be obtained by contacting the park’s internship coordinator, Kūhea Paracuelles, at (808) 572-4452 or [email protected] or by visiting www.nps.gov/hale.
Completed applications must be received or postmarked by Friday, March 15, 2013.
