Maui Flood Warning Lifted: 3 Inches of Rain in Hamoa

At 3 a.m., the flash flood warning expired for Maui.

It had been extended beyond midnight after forecasters observed moderate rain continuing to fall over parts of East Maui.

The National Weather Service reported runoff from the earlier heavy rains caused elevated stream conditions, with localized ponding on roadways.

A flash flood warning remains in effect until midnight for Maui.

Forecasters from the National Weather Service observed radar images at 10:10 p.m. that showed heavy rain continuing over portions of East Maui, with localized rain reportedly falling at rates of over 3 inches per hour in some areas.

The NWS forecasts the heavy rain to persist for the next hour or two.

A flood warning has been issued for Maui, replacing the flood advisory that was issued earlier this evening.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say radar at 8:54 p.m. showed heavy rain falling at over 3 inches per hour near Hamoa in East Maui. The area of rain was nearly stationary.

The warning remains in effect until midnight, but may be extended if heavy rains persist.

The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for Maui shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19.

At 8:18 p.m., forecasters from the NWS observed radar showing heavy rain falling at 1-2 inches per hour near Hamoa in East Maui.  The heavy rain was nearly stationary.

The advisory remains in effect until 11:30 p.m., also includes the Nahiku and Hana areas of East Maui.

The NWS says the advisory may be extended beyond the current parameters if heavy rain persists.

In the interim, the public is reminded to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.

Motorists are asked to drive with caution because of potential ponding, runoff, and poor visibility and braking action.

The NWS reminds motorists and pedestrians not to cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on foot.
