Proposed Bill Would Raise Rates During Water Shortages

A controversial bill that would authorize water rate increases or other water-saving measures during times of drought and declared water shortages is up for discussion.

The measure, if approved, would reportedly give the director of water supply, with the consent of the mayor, the authority to impose such measures when conditions warrant.

The Maui County Council’s Water Resources Committee will discuss the item during an upcoming meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Monday in the Council Chambers. The public is invited to attend.

“This is an opportunity for members of the community to express their concerns about the water shortage bill,” said Committee Chair Michael Victorino in a press release. “We want the public’s input on this important matter before we make a final decision,” he said.

Victorino said that in addition to protecting the interests of residents, the county must also ensure an adequate supply of water during shortage emergencies.
