Hana Airport Nighttime Closures Begin
By Wendy Osher
For the next four months, Hana Airport will be closed at night between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Sunday nights through Friday mornings, state officials announced.
State Transportation officials advise that the nighttime closures are part of a $900,000 airfield lighting improvement project.
Work will reportedly include the removal and replacement of all electrical wiring, runway and taxiway light fixtures, and the replacement of wind-cones.
The nighttime closures are scheduled to begin this Sunday, April 28, and continue through the end of August.
The state Department of Transportation, Airports Division, advises that the closures will not affect air service to Hana Airport, as no flights are regularly scheduled during these overnight hours.
According to information released by state DOT officials, an emergency medivac plan is in place, allowing an alternate landing zone for medical helicopters, should the need arise.
All daytime flight operations, authorities say, will continue as normal.
