“Cutting-Edge” Equipment Blessed at Maui Cancer Center

The Pacific Cancer Institute of Maui held a blessing over the weekend to celebrate the availability of new equipment that reportedly enables higher and fewer doses of radiation for cancer patients, an announcement said.

The facility, located on the grounds of the Maui Memorial Medical Center in Wailuku, recently underwent a $7 million renovation, which included the acquisition of a TrueBeam STx machine.

According to an earlier announcement, the first three patients to use the technology on Maui began the treatments at the center in January.

The piece of equipment boasts “faster and more precise radiation treatment of cancerous tumors,” and is currently the only treatment of its kind in the state, according to information released by the institute today.

The blessing was led by cancer survivor and Kahu Roy Newton, who facility officials say was previously treated at the center for tongue cancer.
