Best Excuse to Watch Ladies Rough Each Other Up

Starting tonight at 6 p.m. the Maui Roller Girls present “Battle of the Islands — Maui 2013,” a statewide roller derby tournament.

Teams from the Big Island, Oahu and Kauai will be doing (friendly) battle with the roller girls tonight.

Events continue tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the championship round taking place at 5 p.m.

The derbies are held at the outdoor basketball court at the Boys and Girls Club in Kahului, so bring a blanket or beach chair.

Tickets are $10 per day at the gate.

Best Excuse to Guzzle Beer

Also tonight from 6 p.m. to midnight, the Maui Brewing Company in Lahaina is hosting a fundraiser for Maui’s native forest birds.

Maui’s native birds are unique species that face unique island problems. There is much needed for their recovery and community support is required.

You can help these birds – found nowhere else in the world – by guzzling some brews, as half of the night’s beer sales will go to research and recovery efforts on the island.

If drinking locally crafted beer isn’t enough, you can anticipate watching forest bird videos and meeting the researchers at the brewpub tonight at well.

Who Says There’s No Such Thing as a Free Lunch?

On Saturday at 10 a.m. a luncheon and social in honor of Maui’s Nisei veterans will be held at the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center in Wailuku.

In addition to lunch and socializing, there will be “fun activities” and an open house and tour of the Education Center.

The Education Center provides a venue for lectures, discussion groups, and displays, as well as a work area activities with the goal of perpetuating the legacy of the Nisei veteran take place.

Best Reason to Chug Some Red Bull

Teams are already formed, but starting at 6 p.m. you can show support to Relay For Life teams involved in this year’s Central and South Maui Relay for Life.

Relay For Life is the signature fund-raising event for the American Cancer Society.

Teams made up of family members, friends, and/or co-workers take turns walking around a track or path. Because cancer never sleeps, each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the overnight event.

Celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to the disease, and learn more about how to fight back against cancer.

The event takes place at the War Memorial Soccer Field and is free to attend.

Best Odds of a Chuckle

Clean-cut, family friendly comedian Brian Regan will be performing at the MACC on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Known for material that explores the humorous side of everyday events like shipping a package with UPS or a visit to an optometrist. Regan’s clean, off-center humor has been praised by critics and contemporaries alike and earned him the moniker of “the comic’s comic.”

The show opens with the comedy of Oahu-born Kermet Apio .

Tickets are $45.50 and $55.50.

Best Excuse to Boogie in the Middle of the Day

This Sunday at Casanova’s in Makawao you can help support the Mana’olana Pink Paddlers canoe club.

Started in 2006 by members of the Maui Canoe Club, the Mana’olana Pink Paddlers was modeled after the Abreast-in-a-Boat program and endeavors to prove by example that exercise can make a difference, and demonstrate that individuals living with cancer can lead full and active lives.

On Sunday, the benefit concert at Casanova’s Italian Restaurant lasts from 2 to 5 p.m. and will be emceed by local personality Kathy Collins. Soul Kitchen will provide the entertainment.

The event will also include a silent auction with gift certificates being offered from Blue Hawaiian Helicopters, Expeditions Lanai ferry, Haleakala Bike Company, Maui Academy of Performing Arts, Maui Jet Ski, Maui Ocean Center, Old Lahaina Luau, Pacific Whale Foundation, Café O’Lei, and Monkeypod Kitchen, among others.

The event is $10 at the door.

Best Thing to Hit the Maui Theater Since Ulalena

In addition to Ulalena, The Maui Theater has added two award-winning acts to their stage.

Dubbed “the voice from down under,” John Stephan’s latest project – You Got It! – has sold out shows around the world and can be seen Sunday night at 6:30 p.m.

The show celebrates Roy Orbison and “tells a very personal narrative of Roy’s intriguing yet tragic life.”

Also added to the lineup is Benise, “The Prince of Spanish Guitar” who takes the stage at 8:30 p.m.

His newest production, The Spanish Guitar, is a theatrical music and dance spectacle that has been called “The Latin Riverdance.” It showcases classic songs from Led Zepplin, Queen, Bach, and The Eagles.
