Ranger Airlifted from Haleakalā Crater

A ranger at Haleakalā National Park on Maui was airlifted out of the crater on Wednesday morning after reporting difficulty breathing and chest pains, officials said.

The incident was reported at 9:49 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7, in the Palikū area of the crater, said Maui Fire Captain Bram DenHaan.

The park ranger was airlifted out of the crater by crews aboard the department’s Air-1 rescue helicopter, and transported to a landing zone outside of the crater, in the Hosmer Grove area, said Capt. DenHaan.

The ranger was then transported via Maui MedEvac to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment, authorities said.

Other crews assisting with the mountain rescue included firefighters from Kula, crews from American Medical Response, Air-1, and a rescue squad from the Kahului Fire Station.
