Hōkūleʻa Heads from Hāna to Honolua Bay
By Wendy Osher
The Polynesian voyaging canoe Hōkūle‘a and its sister canoe, the Hikianalia, will visit Honolua bay today as part of the vessel’s worldwide voyage.
Mālama Hawai‘i is the first leg of the voyage, in which navigators are paying respect to communities throughout the state before embarking on a voyage to the South Pacific in May of 2014.
The public is invited to take complimentary tours of both canoes from 2 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 19 at Honolua Bay, before the canoes depart for Moloka‘i.
The tours are offered in partnership between the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Hawaiian Paddle Sports, Surfrider Maui and The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.
The vessel comes to the Honolua community after a weekend stop at the East Maui town of Hāna from Aug. 16 to 18.
The Polynesian Voyaging Society schedule includes future stops at Kaluapapa on Moloka‘i from Aug. 19 to 20; and Kaunakakai from Aug. 20 to 23.
Dates are subject to change based on weather and safety.
