Hazmat Incident Forces Kula Hwy Closure, Area Residents Notified

Kamehameiki Rd in Kula is now OPEN. The road was closed since 2:45 p.m. due to a hazardous material incident. Full details will be posted when the information becomes available. Authorities have not yet said what substance was involved.

Kula Hwy is open, but Kamehamehaiki Rd is still closed.  No further details surrounding the incident have been released.

Maui Police recommend that the public traveling in and out of the upper Kula area to use Kekaulike Rosf to get around the hazmat location. No further details surrounding the incident have been released.

Emergency units are on the scene of a hazardous material incident on the Kula Highway, officials said.

At 2:42 p.m., Maui police closed Kamehameiki Road at Kula Highway following a reported hazardous material spill, according to advisories issued by the Maui Police Department.

Traffic was being diverted to Lower Kula Road at last report, and it was unknown how long the duration of the closure would last.

According to updated information released by the county, the Kula Highway has been closed from Lower Kula Rd just before Haleakala Waldorf School to Kamehameiki Intersection, “due to a possible leak in a container of hazardous material.”

Area notifications were reportedly taking place in the immediate area.
