County officials have since issued a clarification saying the repairs were to a water line that had broken.
Several county advisories had been issued describing the condition as a “sink hole.”
According to County Communications Director Rod Antone, East Maui work crews said the broken water line feeds into the County Garage building.
The line was repaired by the Maui Department of Water Supply this morning, and the road was reopened at 9:45 a.m.
