Acting Governor Shan Tsutsui announced the release of more than $1.5 million in general obligation bonds for hospitals in Maui County.

State officials say the projects were identified by members of the state Legislature as priority items prior to the release of funds.

Maui Memorial Medical Center in Central Maui is the recipient of $1 million that will go towards repairs, plumbing, asbestos abatement, and roof maintenance, the announcement said.

The list also included $300,000 to Kula Hospital for the remediation and removal of lead paint and asbestos; and $280,000 to Lānaʻi Community Hospital for a re-roofing project.

Statewide, the funding release included separate appropriations for ambulance and hospital facilities on Oʻahu.

The largest appropriation was a $3.8 million release for the planning, design and construction of an ambulance facility in the Central Oʻahu area of Waipiʻo.

Also on Oʻahu, $939,000 has been released for Lēʻahi Hospital on Oʻahu for the replacement of an old fire alarm system; and $542,000 to Maluhia Hospital on Oʻahu for the replacement of 30-year-old elevator cabs.

The list also includes $1.2 million for phase two of ceiling mitigation at the Kona Community Hospital on Hawaiʻi Island.

Lt. Governor Shan Tsutsui of Maui is serving as acting governor until Oct. 11 while Governor Abercrombie is on personal travel in France following fiscal meetings in Los Angeles and New York last week.
