Catch Encores of Maui Film Festival Favorites

This Saturday, Nov. 23 from 4 to 10 p.m. is the Maui Film Festival’s First-Ever ‘FirstNight of FirstLight,’ a trio of encore showings of some of the more popular showings from last June’s Maui Film Festival.

The screening series begins at 4 p.m. in the MACC’s Castle Theater with the documentary The Short Game, followed by award-winning independent film Short Term 12 at 6 p.m., and closing with documentary 20 Feet From Stardom at 8 p.m.

In case you missed them (or the descriptions) the first time around, The Short Game is described by promoters as a “family-friendly, surprising, touching, and often hilarious sports documentary featuring 7-year-old world champion golfers.”

Better yet, this SXSW-Award winner is free to kids 12 and under.

Short Term 12 is a SXSW-winning masterpiece written and directed by Maui born-and-raised filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton, whose birthday also happens to be on Saturday.

Starring Maui Film Festival Rising Star Honoree Brie Larson, Short Term 12 is being called “one of the best indie films of the year.”

Since that doesn’t really explain anything about the plot, IMDB was kind enough to clarify that it follows “a 20-something supervising staff member of a foster care facility navigates the troubled waters of that world alongside her co-worker and longtime boyfriend.”

The final screening, 20 Feet From Stardom, opened at the Sundance Film Festival last winter.

Described as “a rocking documentary featuring Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Bette Midler and Sheryl Crow (and more) singing praises for the greatest backup singers of our time.”

Single tickets to each movie are $15.

Alternately, a $48 VIP FastPass entitles you to four film admissions, which can be shared with family and friends. Additionally, FastPasses are valid for both November, December and January’s FirstLight screenings.
