Kapalua House Fire “Intentionally” Set

Fire officials say an early morning structure fire and nearby brush fire in Kapalua were both intentionally set, causing an estimated $3,000 in damage to the home, which was unoccupied at the time.

The incident was reported at 2:42 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, just north of DT Fleming Park.

Firefighters from Nāpili and Lahaina were initially dispatched to a report of a brush fire near the park, and arrived to find a small brush fire alongside the roadway, officials said.

While extinguishing the brush fire, fire personnel noticed that the garage wall and kitchen entryway of a home located at 6245 Honoapiʻilani Highway was involved in flames, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

Both fires were quickly brought under control by 3:04 a.m., and the structure fire was called extinguished at 3:52 a.m., according to department reports.

Investigations are being conducted by inspectors with the Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety and the Maui Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
