King’s 24 points Sparks Seabury’s Best Finish

Seabury Hall’s Cameron King finished with a game-high 24 points Saturday as the Spartans of Olinda defeated Kohala, 57-45, en route to a third-place finish at the 2014 Division II state boys basketball tournament on Oahu.

The Spartans enjoyed the best postseason by a Maui Interscholastic League school since the state added the Division II tournament eight years ago. Seabury’s previous best finishes were fourth the last two years, losing both times to Hawaii Preparatory Academy.

Molokai also finished fourth in 2009.

In addition, the 16-1 season mark the Spartans closed with at the Neal Blaisdell Arena is also a school record. Seabury suffered its only defeat in 2014 on Friday, 58-35, against a red-hot HPA team that plays host Kalani for the championship later tonight.

Seabury trailed Kohala by three points at the start of the game. Things changed one minute and 28 seconds later, that’s when Jordan Haylor hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 7-7 and the Spartans never looked back, building a 10-point lead with 2:07 to play in the second period and a comfortable 27-19 advantage at the break.

Seabury continued to dominate the action in the second half, pulling ahead by as many as 19 points twice in the fourth quarter. In fact, the Cowboys never got closer than 11, despite finishing slightly ahead in all the statistical categories like points in the paint (28-20), points off turnovers (18-14), second chance points (10-6), and points off the bench (19-14).

King also had nine boards, matching the number that Bryce Barbier had. Jaxson Stinger added 12 points, 7 rebounds and Rip Pahukoa chipped in nine points.

Shawn Ray Ramos was the only Kohala player to finish with double-digit points with 12.

Kohala capped its season with an 11-5 mark.
