Heavy Rain over Haleakalā Prompts Flood Advisory

A flood advisory has been issued for the island of Maui due to heavy rains reported over the windward and south slopes of Haleakalā.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory until 10:45 a.m. on Friday, March 28, 2014, saying radar shows heavy rain from Keʻanae to Kīpahulu and Kaupō.

Rangers from Haleakalā National Park are also reporting that ʻOheʻo Gulch is closed due to elevated stream levels.

The advisory also includes the East Maui areas of Nāhiku, Hāna, Nuʻu, and Hāmoa.

The NWS reminds the public to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding.

Motorists and pedestrians are reminded not to cross fast flowing or rising water in their vehicle or on foot.   

The advisory may need to be extended if heavy rain persists.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also confirmed these conditions.
