Upward Bound Offers Free Meals at Summer Academy

The University of Hawaiʻi Maui College is participating in a Summer Food Service Program that offers eligible children enrolled in the Upward Bound program free meals.

In order to receive free meals, children must meet income guidelines for reduced-price meals in the National School Lunch Program; and must also be fully enrolled in the six-week Upward Bound program at UHMC, which runs from June 9 to July 18, 2014.

“Children who are part of households that receive foods stamps, or benefits under the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, or Temporary Assistance to Needy Families are automatically eligible to receive free meals at open sites on Maui,” the announcement said.  For details and further information on participating sites, potential candidates can call (808) 587-3600.

Eligible students in the Upward Bound Summer Academy will have meals provided at the following sites and times:

• Breakfast: 7:15 to 7:45 a.m., Monday to Friday, at the UHMC Pāʻina Food Court for eligible Upward Bound Summer Academy participants only;
• Lunch: 12:15 to 12:45 p.m., Monday to Friday, at the UHMC Pāʻina Food Court for eligible Upward Bound Summer Academy participants only; and
• Dinner: 5:45 to 7:15 p.m., at the Kūlanaaʻo Apartments for eligible Upward Bound Summer Academy Participants. Meals will be prepared in dorms.

Upward Bound is a program of the US Department of Education that serves high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree.  The program was designed to provide fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance.
