Visitor Airlifted After Waterslide Accident at Kahoma Cabin

A 31-year-old visitor from Granite Bay, California was transported to the hospital in stable condition after suffering a back injury in a waterslide accident at the area known as Kahoma Cabin in West Maui, fire officials said.

The incident was reported at 12:31 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, in a remote and mountainous area.

Fire crews traveled through about three miles of off-road terrain to access the site where first responders arrived to find the woman being supported in the shallow water of a pond, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

According to department reports, the victim, who complained of lower to middle back pain, told first responders that the injury occurred while sliding down a water slide chute.

Fire crews secured the woman to a backboard, and utilized the department’s Air 1 helicopter to airlift the woman to a landing zone near Lahainaluna High School, fire officials said.

The woman was then transferred to an ambulance for transport to the Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Crews responding to the scene included Ladder 3 and Engine 3 from the Lahaina Fire Station, Rescue 10 from Kahului, and the department’s Air 1 helicopter.
