A visitor from Missouri died after being pulled from waters in Kāʻanapali on Friday, police said.

First responders were called to the scene at around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 30, 2014, to the beach area behind the Sheraton Maui, located along Kāʻanapali Parkway in West Maui.

According to police reports, beach goers assisted the victim to shore and began CPR after finding the man unresponsive while snorkeling about 20 feet offshore.

Officials say police, fire and medics responded to the scene with emergency units resuming life saving measures.

Attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful and the victim died, police said.

The case has been classified as a miscellaneous accident and the cause of death is pending autopsy results.
