Unscheduled Pāʻia Cane Burn Results in $5,000 Loss

Firefighters battled a fast moving unscheduled cane fire in Pāʻia on Wednesday afternoon that burned one acre of cane, and resulted in monetary losses estimated at $5,000, fire officials said.
The fire was reported at 2:17 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, and was located in a Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company field above Pāʻia School on Baldwin Avenue.
Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said the fire was extinguished at 3:14 p.m., and that the cause of the fire was undetermined.
The Maui Police Department closed a portion of Baldwin Avenue between Pāʻia School and Holomua Road for about an hour while firefighters from Pāʻia and Kahului battled the blaze.
Fire officials say no injuries were reported and no structures were threatened.
