No Tsunami From 6.8M Earthquake Off Japan

A strong earthquake that struck off the coast of Japan today did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

The tremor, which occurred at 9:22 a.m. Hawaii time, registered a preliminary magnitude of 6.8, the Ewa Beach, Oahu-based center said.

The epicenter of the quake was near the east coast of the island of Honshu, about 176 miles east-northeast of Tokyo. It occurred at a depth of 8.3 miles, the US Geologic Survey said.

It was located about 55 miles northeast of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked Japan in 2011.
