275 Gallons of Wastewater Overflows in Kāʻanapali

An estimated 275 gallons of wastewater overflowed in the vicinity of Kāʻanapali Parkway in West Maui on Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, county officials said.

The Maui Department of Environmental Management confirmed the incident saying the overflow was reported at 7:20 a.m. and was stopped by 8:25 a.m.

Department officials say the cause of the overflow was grease in the mainline.

According to department reports, the wastewater flowed from a manhole on Kāʻanapali Parkway, continued down the curb, with 120 gallons entering a storm drain.

County officials say the blockage was cleared, the wastewater was pumped up, and the spill site was cleaned and disinfected.

Warning signs were posted and sampling is being conducted to determine if any of the wastewater reached a waterway.

The State Department of Health has been notified.
