A 26-year-old Haʻikū man suffered critical injuries in a single-vehicle crash when he lost control of the vehicle he was operating, failed to negotiate a turn, and collided into a tree on West Kuiaha Road on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The incident was reported at 4:06 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, on West Kuiaha Road, about 0.7 miles north of Kaupakalua Road in Haʻikū.

Police say the man was the lone occupant of a black 1991 Jeep Wrangler and was traveling down West Kuiaha Road when the incident occurred.

According to a police report filed by Maui Police Officer Lawrence Becraft, speed is suspected as a factor in the collision.
