“Holiday Gift to Maui Nui” Cleanup at Kanahā, Dec. 6

Mālama Maui Nui will hold its “Holiday Gift to Maui Nui” cleanup this Saturday, Dec. 6 from 8 to 11 a.m. at Kanahā Beach Park in Kahului.

Volunteers are asked to join in cleaning the heavily-used recreational park ahead of the holidays.

The event will focus on the removal of overgrown kiawe and litter.  Crews will also focus on other structure improvement projects.

Volunteers who wish to participate should meet at the Kaʻa Point parking lot at 8 a.m.

Volunteers who wish to help with the kiawe should bring leather work gloves and wear closed-toed shoes. Volunteers should also bring refillable water bottles, reusable bags or buckets for collecting litter, and protection from the sun.

“Holiday Gift to Maui Nui” is the last of five annual cleanup campaigns hosted by Mālama Maui Nui (formerly Community Work Day Program). While each campaign has its own signature theme, all cleanups share the common goal of engaging the Maui County community–residents, visitors, businesses, and community groups–to participate in a hosted MMN cleanup, or to organize their own event to care for an area of Maui they love.

“This is the perfect opportunity to show our children that there is more to the holidays than just unwrapping presents,” said Executive Director John P. de Jesus in an agency press release. “‘Holiday Gift to Maui Nui’ calls on us to give the gift of our time and energy to our beloved ‘āina, and at the same time, to give the gift of a healthy environment to each other.”

Individuals who wish to organize their own cleanup event or beautification project can contact Mālama Maui Nui to reserve supplies and post-event trash pickup service by calling 877-2524 or by emailing [email protected]. Events within a week of Dec. 6 will count towards the “Holiday Gift to Maui Nui” campaign.
