The Maui Arts & Cultural Center is bringing a new, Grammy-winning sextet to the stage–eighth blackbird. The ensemble will be performing both contemporary and classical compositions in the Castle Theater Wednesday, Feb. 11, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Los Angeles Times called the group “super-musicians.” Their musical prowess and presentation is described as a fusion of string quartet elegance combined with rock ‘n roll energy. The group has provoked and wowed audiences across the nation and world.

Eighth blackbird consists of Tim Munro on flute; Michael J. Maccaferri on clarinet; Yvonne Lam playing violin and viola; Nicholas Photinos, cello; Doug Perkins on percussion; and Lisa Kaplan, piano. Hailing from both the US and Australia, the group has claimed three Grammy Awards and has six acclaimed recordings with Cedille Records.

A concert reviewer at cincinatti.com wrote of the group, “The sextet eighth blackbird is simply the most exciting force for new music on the concert stage today.” The Chicago Tribune marveled: “Their ability to synchronize in absolute lockstep was, in a word, amazing.”

Tickets are $12, $30, and $40, plus applicable fees, and are available for purchase at The MACC Box Office by calling (808) 242 SHOW (7469) Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.to 6 p.m., or online at MauiArts.org.
