Maui Students to Present Work in Soil Science

The Haleakalā Chapter of the Maui Farmers Union United will feature a presentation by seven Maui Montessori school kids in grades six to eight.

The Haleakalā Chapter of the Maui Farmers Union United will feature a presentation by seven Maui Montessori students in grades six to eight. The presentation on how healthy soils aid in food growth will follow the monthly “locavore” potluck at the Ha‘ikū Community Center on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. and include a video made by students documenting their hands-on work.

The students participated in the soil science experiment with their teacher, Scott Lacasse, who attended a county-funded workshop on Korean Natural Farming last May. KNF, a method of natural farming that utilizes indigenous microorganisms, has been used as a potent remedy in rejuvenating lifeless soils to a state of thriving fertility.

Lacasse taught his students how to pre-test and post-test soils to see the results of using IMOs on the lettuce crop they planted.
