By Wendy Osher
Today is Prince Kūhiō Day.
Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana’ole is credited with the establishment of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act that provides homestead lands for Native Hawaiians.
He was elected as a territorial delegate to the US Congress and was credited with restoring the Royal Order of Kamehameha I and establishing the Hawaiian Civic Club.
He is remembered each year on March 26th, the date of his birth.
Here on Maui, the non-profit Paukūkalo Hawaiian Homes Community Association will host a Kūhiō Day celebration on Saturday, April 4th at the Paukūkalo Homes Park.
The event will feature hālau performances, food concessions, crafts, health screenings and informational booths.
Festivities are scheduled to run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
