Art of Trash & Trashion Show a Recycling Success

An estimated 250 to 300 attendees enjoyed The Art of Trash’s opening night events and Trashion Show at Maui Mall’s Center Stage on Friday, April 10, and approximately 220 people visited the gallery during its debut hours between 7 and 9 p.m.

Opening Night began with music by Steve & Robert Sargenti and the Junkyard Gods, featuring the guitars Robert made from an old surfboard and skateboards, respectively–both on display at the gallery.

Also performing were Sweet Beets (surfboard guitar), Brown Chicken Brown Cow’s Matt “Yum-Yum” Del Olmo (skateboard guitar), Kristin Johnson (drums) and Kat Fountain (harmonica).

Ryan Anderson’s student musical performance group, Marenje Maui, opened the Trashion Show, parading through the crowd with their dancing trash whale.

Kathy Collins emceed the event, which was presented by Mālama Maui Nui and SharingAloha.

The highlight of the evening was the recycled fashions made by students from Kīhei Charter High School, St. Anthony High School, Baldwin High School and Roots Middle School, as well as community members at large.

The “trashionista” fashions were modeled accompanied by Marenje Maui as they paraded down the catwalk showing off their creative, re-purposed outfits.

The public can see the winning Trashion Show outfits and and art pieces at the Art of Trash gallery, open daily with free admission from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through May 2.

Many pieces are also on sale on a first-come, first-served basis.

Trashion Show Winners 
First Place: Laurie Furumoto, art teacher from St. Anthony High School, designed “Plastic Tablecloth Bride” modeled by Oriana Kalama, who was accompanied by her adorable little dog groom.

Second Place: Brice Fleischer from Kīhei Charter High School designed and modeled her dress made out of garbage bags and chicken wire.

Third Place: Tallulah Ghantous from Roots Middle School designed (with the help of friends Oscar and Anabella) and modeled “Magazine Maniac,” a mosaic dress made of magazines.

Honorable Mentions: Tammy Abrew from Saint Anthony School dress made out of a plastic shower curtain with accessories including a rubber duck, and Chloe Hopfner from Kihei Charter High School dress made out of meticulously folded newspapers.

Art of Trash Gallery
Sixty-three entries were considered during submission day on Saturday, April 4. Art of Trash Juror Ira Ono selected 32 pieces, which are now on display at the gallery.
