Kumu Kahua Theatre will present “Shoyu on Rice.”

By Maui Now Staff

Kumu Kahua Theatre will present “Shoyu on Rice” by Scot Izuka on Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s McCoy Studio Theater.

The play takes place in the mid-1980s. Students attending a Catholic all-boys high school deal with their use of pidgin English when a substitute teacher from Kansas takes over their classroom. Meanwhile, the substitute struggles to learn local ways in both the classroom and in the home of her Japanese-American fiancé’s parents.
