Kula Community Group to Discuss Medical Care, Higher Education

Maui’s health care and higher education will be the focus of discussion at the upcoming meeting of the Kula Community Association, scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, at the Kula Community Center.

New University of Hawaiʻi Maui College Chancellor and Kula resident, Lui Hokoana, will speak on the transition of the college into a four-year university.

Association representatives say of interest to upcountry residents, is the relationship of the college to the expanding telescope operations atop Haleakalā.

The meeting will also feature discussion on Maui’s changing health care with Maui Regional System Director Wes Lo and Dr. Nicole Apoliona, medical director of the Kula Hospital and Clinic.

The two will clarify recent legislation that authorizes Maui’s hospitals to transition into a public-private partnership.

“Of special importance will be the medical changes — for better or worse — that we might expect at both Kula Hospital and Maui Memorial,” said organization leaders in an event announcement.
