Maui Bicycling League to Host ‘Easy Ride’ on Kanaha Bike Path

The public is invited to participate in an easy Central Maui Bike Ride, a free event offered by the nonprofit Maui Bicycling League on Sunday, May 31.

The flat course and free ice cream for participants are two of the attractions that make this ride ideal for families and beginners.

The Central Maui Bike ride begins at 1 p.m. at the Kaunoa Senior Center (401 Alakapa Place) off Hāna Highway between Kahului and Pāʻia.

Participants will ride on the paved county bike path to Kanaha Park and back.

More advanced riders are invited to continue their ride on the shoulder along Amala Place to Island Grocery Depot before returning. An additional segment from Kaunoa Senior Center to Baby Beach in Sprecklesville is also an option.

Participants are required to wear helmets. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Water bottles are recommended.

Free Brio Ice Cream will be available for participants who complete the basic ride from the senior center to the park and back.

Brio ice cream is a new non-GMO, certified gluten-free, nutritious ice cream. The company was recently launched in Hawaiʻi by Kula resident Arnie Koss and his twin brother Ron.

“Many people are surprised to discover this quiet, paved bike path that’s so close to Kahului,” said Ceal Potts, co-chair of Maui Bicycling League. “It is an ideal place to bring your kids to introduce them to the fun of biking. It’s also a great place for beginning riders who want to built fitness before tackling some of Maui’s more hilly routes.”

“This is a fun way to meet other people who are interested in bicycling and enjoy a relaxed ride in a beautiful area,” said Potts.

National Bike Month is a national event established in 1956, and is sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists. National Bike Month showcases the many benefits of bicycling and encourages more people to giving biking a try.

Maui Bicycling League is a nonprofit organization and a neighbor island chapter of Hawaiʻi Bicycling League. The organization works to make Maui a safer place for bicyclists and pedestrians, through education, advocacy and public outreach.
