A former Maui resident made a court appearance today after being extradited back to Hawaiʻi from Las Vegas, Nevada for an alleged tax violation, the Hawaiʻi Department of Taxation reported.

According to state officials, Shirley Suguitan was arrested in early May 2015 by the Las Vegas Police Department, pursuant to an outstanding felony warrant for making an alleged “false and fraudulent statement,” in violation of Hawaiʻi law, HRS 231-36 (a).

Department director, Maria Zielinski released a statement saying, “We will aggressively pursue those individuals and businesses that violate Hawaiʻi’s tax laws and regulations.  This will ensure the integrity of a fair tax system where we all pay our share.”
