Moped Crash Claims Life of Kahului Man

A 25-year-old Kahului man suffered fatal injuries in a moped crash on South Papa Avenue in Kahului on Saturday morning, June 20, 2015.

The incident was reported at 7:19 a.m. on South Papa Avenue, about80 feet south of the Maʻalo Street intersection in Kahului.

According to police reports, the crash occurred when the driver of a blue 2009 Honda CR-V that was traveling north on South Papa Avenue, attempted to make a left turn into a residential driveway.

Police say the CR-V struck a black Vespa moped that was traveling south within the south bound lane of
South Papa Avenue.

As a result of the crash, the 25-year-old moped operator, identified as Davin K. Ah Yen of Kahului, suffered
critical injuries and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room where he later died.

Police say the 23-year-old Kahului man operating the CR-V did not suffer any injuries.

According to police reports, Ah Yen was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.  Police say the operator of the CR-V was wearing his seatbelt, and the passenger side airbag curtains did deploy as a result of the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.  The crash was the fifth fatality on Maui County roads this year compared to 14 at the same time last year.
