5,000 Gallons of Waste Water Overflows in Lahaina

The County of Maui’s Department of Environmental Management reported that a waste water overflow of approximately 5,000 gallons occurred on Monday, July 27, 2015 at the Lahaina Pump Station No. 2 along North Honoapiʻilani Hwy.

County officials say the overflow was caused by a control wire failure at the pump station and flowed from 11:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Waste water flowed from a sewer manhole along the Honoapiʻilani Highway into a storm drain during the incident and discharged into the Kāʻanapali Golf Course Pond, county officials said.

The area was cleaned and disinfected, and warning signs were posted. Bacteriological tests are being conducted to determine if the spill reached the ocean.

The State Department of Health has been notified.
