Governor David Ige on Monday announced that Scott Morishige will join the administration on August 24th as the state’s point person for homelessness.
Morishige leaves his post as the executive director of a nonprofit advocacy group for health and human services.
In his new capacity as state coordinator on homelessness, he will lead the Hawai‘i Interagency Council on Homelessness, staff the Governor’s Leadership Team on Homelessness, and work closely with Director of Human Services and the rest of the cabinet on a coordinated statewide plan.
There are an estimated 1,137 homeless individuals on Maui, up 12% from last year, according to a new report compiled by the state Department of Human Services.
