UPDATE: Man Medevaced After Fall at Kaihalulu “Red Sand” Trail in Hāna

A 20-year-old man was airlifted out of Kaihalulu Bay in the east Maui town of Hāna after falling from a trail on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015.

The incident was reported shortly before 12 p.m. in the area often referred to as “Red Sand Beach.”

Sources tell Maui Now that the man fell while hiking on the narrow trail that leads to the beach.  Maui Fire Services Officer Edward Taomoto said, “The victim tumbled off the edge of the trail and landed onto the lava rocks roughly 20 feet below.”

The man was airlifted out of the area with a rescue helicopter and transported to a landing zone at the Hāna Ball Park.  Paramedics treated the man for non-life-threatening injuries and eventually transferred him to a medevac helicopter standing by.

An Air Ambulance then transported the man in stable condition to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.

Maui fire officials say the man is from Rhode Island and was backpacking on Maui with people he met here.   Maui FSO Taomoto said the man was hiking to the beach with friends when the accident happened.
